I am James’ mum, and like many parents of children with Special Educational Needs, we’re on a unique and unexpected journey. This is a glimpse into our life.
I write about life with James, my nonspeaking autistic son, and the questions we encounter around communication, learning, support and belonging.
James has significant learning and support needs. Our days contain care, uncertainty and difficult moments, as well as humour, connection and discoveries that change how I think. I’m learning to ask what opportunities a person might be missing when speech, movement or conventional assessments make it hard for them to show what they know.
This website brings together our family experience, practical ideas and research. I distinguish what I have observed from what I believe it might mean, and I update my thinking when I learn more.
